Web hosting - some things they don't tell you

Can I use any web host?

If you have a website that needs to be hosted you can literally use any web host. This rule of thumb is based on a simple static website. Once your website becomes more complex you may become restricted.

The restrictions can go from the programming languages your website relies on to the type of shopping cart you wish to use. If you are running third party software through your site like photo gallery software or database technology you definitely have to check with your host if they support the programming language your software was programmed in. Most hosts now have to run as many features as they can to get business through their door but you still have to check. You don’t want to pay for a year’s hosting and have your site not work.

I programmed my website in Frontpage and it doesn’t work online

Some hosts don’t offer hosting for sites with Frontpage extensions. If they do you either have to make a special request or you have to enable this feature with your host. It is a peculiar anomaly but as FrontPage is popular may hosts are exploiting consumers to get a further fee out of them.

What things do web hosts not provide for free and they should

You really shouldn’t have any restrictions on subdomains and email accounts running from your website. Some hosts are stingy and offer only 2 email accounts and you have to pay more to use extra accounts. In reality, a web host can service a near unlimited number of email accounts and sub domains at no extra cost to them. This means you shouldn’t have to pay more yourself. The only reason they offer small amounts in basic packages is so they can differentiate between basic packages and premium packages.
