Adware

What is Adware?

Adware is a type of program designed to post advertisements while you are connected to the Internet. Adware is not malicious in terms of harm to your computer but is malicious in terms of how it gets onto your computer. Adware is normally attached to a free download program that you may have got from the internet. Malicious programmers know that every consumer wants everything free, or will try free programs before they pay for a full program, so they exploit this to spread Adware. Adware is known to change default settings of your browser, change your home page and generally be a nuisance. As Microsoft seems to be the enemy of many programmers most Adware program target Microsoft Internet Explorer and most target the XP system. Mac Users generally have few, or no problems with Adware.

Adware is also referred to as spy ware. However, that is incorrect as spyware has a different purpose. Spyware are programs designed to be hidden on your computer to covertly monitor your usage. By its purpose, Adware is the opposite as its whole reason for being is to be noticed as often as possible.

I cannot block adware?

Adware programs are constantly being created and updated. When you buy an Adware blocker from the Internet make sure you get one that has free updates. Most Adware blockers today have this so make sure it is included. You need these free updates as new Adware may come along which your blocker may not recognise and you will have the same problem again.

How can I get rid of Adware?

Just as new Adware programs are being created and developed there are just as many companies producing anti-Adware software. You need this. Recent studies have shown that over a third of all computers have Adware or spy ware products detected on their computer. This is a nuisance that you can combat and by installing Adware removal programs you have taken steps to victory. Be vigilant though as technology is always evolving and Adware will always try and find its way onto your computer.

How do I know that the program I have downloaded does not contain Adware.

In many respects you do not know if programs you download have Adware attached. There are steps you can take to mitigate the risk of accidentally downloading Adware.

First step, is investigate the company you are looking to download software from. Normally, it is clear if the company is reputable or not. A reputable company will not give you software with Adware attached.

Second step, check the fine print to see if this is an ’Advertisement’ sponsored or driven program. If so, there may be risk that the adverts don’t go away even if you un-install your program. Adware has a habit of hanging around.

Third step, is pay for a product you need. It is always nice to get free software and downloads, but calculate whether paying for the software you need is more expensive than paying for the many security and Adware removal programs you will need. Also, calculate the amount of time lost spent on removing the ads and the speed of your computer. Adware adds files to your system thereby slowing it down.

If you lose so much performance you may even need to upgrade your computer. Was it all worth it for a free program?
